Photo Journal: Strange Portrait

Shooting street photography on film has been my #1 hobby for the last few years. I prefer shooting in color because the world is in color. But on January 1st of this year, I decided to try black & white film to shake things up. As fate would have it, I found this shirtless guy outside who was apparently trying a natural version of cryotherapy. At first, I tried to sneak a photo like I normally would, but he caught my eye. Gone was the element of surprise. Then it occurred to me — new year, new film, new approach! So I just asked him if I could take his portrait. He said yes with a big smile. I’d never shot portraits with a stranger before. I didn’t know how to direct someone to best capture their light. I was pretending like I knew what I was doing. We chatted for about 30 minutes while I focused, shot, and moved, again and again and again. I think it worked out ok. Sometimes, fortune favors the bold.
